Self-Testing Your Products

There are 2 main steps to completing the self-test. For flexible packaging, there is an additional step to ensure material strength of the packaging. Pre-test and post-test photos of packaging and item are required for both rigid and flexible packaging.

Self-Testing Instructions
Numbering

Start numbering on the largest side of the box/mailer, and continue numbering (1-4) by rotating the package to the right. The remaining surfaces are numbers 5-6. Make sure to photograph the undamaged package first. Use this same package throughout the entire test.

Drop testing

Mark 45.7cm and 91.4cm on a table leg or wall. Drop the box/mailer from the height onto the face, edge, or corner in the order listed below.

Material Strength Test (flexible packaging only)

Drop a fresh corrugate box sized 22.9cm x 7.6cm x 15.2cm containing a 1.4kg bag of sand from a height of 91.4cm directly on to the bag without causing material punctures, item damage or seal failure.

Structure (flexible packaging only)

You must ensure the structure:

  • Provides protection against sortation and distribution
  • Is sealed with contents full enclosed
  • DOES NOT have excess slack-fill

Evaluate your product and packaging after self-testing

After self-testing is complete, the packaging must pass the below two steps to determine if the product can be certified.

Document results from self-testing

After the drop test and evaluation is complete, record the post-test images. Five photos of rigid packaging and six photos of flexible packaging are required as follows:
