FAQs
What is the Ships in Product Packaging (SIPP) program?
The Ships in Product Packaging program offers Amazon Selling Partners the opportunity to test and qualify to ship customer orders in their own custom-brand packaging without any Amazon-added material. Where possible, this packaging is easy-to-open and recyclable.
I have previously heard of the Frustration Free Packaging (FFP) or
Ship in Own Container (SIOC) program, is this the same program?
Yes, we rebranded to Ships in Product Packaging (SIPP) to better reflect the program’s objective. You may still see FFP or SIOC terminology utilized within program materials, as these represent differences in certification.
What are the requirements to participate
Product and packaging must be a minimum of 6” x 4” x 0.375” regardless of packaging structure and follow a short testing sequence to ensure packaging can sufficiently withstand fulfillment. Review the program guidelines for a comprehensive view of product and packaging requirements.
Is there a difference between Ships in Product Packaging (SIPP) and
Ships in Own Container (SIOC)?
No, the packaging certification standards for SIPP are the same as SIOC. We have recently rebranded to Ships in Product Packaging (SIPP) to better reflect the program’s objective to selling partners and customers.
Which marketplaces is the program available in?
The SIPP program is available to sellers who use FBA that sell into these seven marketplaces: Canada, United States, and France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
Are Customers notified that their product will be shipped as Ships in Product Packaging?
Yes, customers will see a message that indicates that the ASIN can ship in its own packaging during checkout for ASINs that are SIPP certified. When a customer adds a SIPP-certified item from the Amazon website to their shopping cart, they are presented with a concealment option for the majority of products at check-out and they can choose to add Amazon packaging (“Ships in Amazon Packaging”) at no additional cost. Sellers receive incentives for the ASINs that are enrolled and SIPP certified by the seller, regardless of whether the customers choose to add Amazon packaging. Please see this page to learn more about the SIPP customer experience.
Which of my ASINs are eligible for SIPP?
ASINs that fulfill the SIPP requirements and sold in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and United Kingdom marketplaces are eligible. Once enrollment is available through Seller Central, you will be able to search ASINs you are interested in enrolling to determine their eligibility.
Will an ASIN enrolled in the SIPP program always be shipped without Amazon-added packaging?
If a SIPP-certified ASIN is shipped with one or more other items as part of a customer order, it may be placed in an Amazon box, bag or envelope to preserve customer experience and reduce the number of individual packages they receive. Sellers receive incentives for the ASIN that is SIPP certified, regardless of whether it is shipped as a single item or with one or more items.
How do I enroll an ASIN into SIPP?
To enroll an ASIN into SIPP, follow the steps outlined in the Get Certified section on our website that include, 1. Reviewing SIPP Guidelines, 2. Grouping similar products, 3. Testing product and product packaging, and 4. Enrolling through Seller Central.
Do I need to conduct separate testing to certify all variations of
the ASIN that is being tested?
No. You don’t have to conduct separate testing for all the variations of a product. Amazon will provide ASIN grouping recommendations and product variations that are considered physically similar. If the primary product, which is the heaviest and largest product of the product group is already certified, the secondary ASINs in that group can be certified without a test report. If the primary product is not certified, you can enroll all corresponding variations by conducting and submitting the test for the primary product.
You can also evaluate the products and add them to the recommended product groups. Eligible products should be grouped based on size, weight, material, packaging, product to packaging ratio, pack quantity with few exceptions. To learn more about the guidelines for grouping products, go to Product groups for Ships in Product Packaging (SIPP) certification.
Do I have to enroll all the eligible products or all variations of a product?
No. You can choose the product or the variation of a product you’d like to enroll in the SIPP program. We make it easy for you to enroll some or all the variations of an product without separately testing all of them. The SIPP enrollment portal provides ASIN grouping recommendations and product variations that are considered physically similar. If the primary product, which is the heaviest and largest product of the product group is already certified, the secondary ASINs in that group can be certified without a test report. Otherwise, you can enroll the corresponding variations by conducting and submitting the one test for the primary product. For more details, go to Product groups for Ships in Product Packaging (SIPP) certification.
What is the FBA fulfillment fees discount rate that I will receive?
Why are some of ASINs already shipping without
Amazon-added packaging?
In our effort to reduce packaging waste, Amazon’s fulfillment network has a program that utilizes machine learning to identify, test, and then certify SIPP compliant ASINs without sellers needing to take any action. ASINs certified in this way will also qualify for the discounted FBA fulfillment fee when shipped to customers. There is no further action required from sellers to obtain the discounts on already SIPP certified ASINs.
How does the SIPP discount apply after I enroll an ASIN?
When you enroll ASINs that are not currently SIPP certified, you will be asked to provide the certification date in the Seller Central SIPP portal before the request is reviewed by Amazon. The certification date should be chosen based upon the first arrival date of your SIPP compliant product to Amazon Fulfillment Centers. Once your enrollment request has been approved, discounts will apply on units that are received at Amazon Fulfillment Centers after the ASIN certification date you provided. No discounts will apply on units received before the certification date. ASINs SIPP certified before Feb 5, 2024 will automatically receive the discounted FBA fulfillment fees in CA, US, FR, DE, IT, ES and UK marketplaces starting on Feb 5, 2024.
For SIPP ASINs, are there any changes in the shipping
requirements to send products to Amazon?
No, you will continue to inbound SIPP certified ASINs to Amazon Fulfillment Centers in the same manner as before, while ensuring that their packaging meets the standards specified in the SIPP guidelines.
Each unit of a SIPP certified product that is inbounded needs to have an exterior scannable label per the labelling guidelines on Seller Central.
Are SIPP ASINs eligible for the Climate Pledge Friendly (CPF) Badge?
SIPP is not part of the Climate Pledge Friendly program. In order to be eligible for the Climate Pledge Friendly badge, your ASIN must have one of the qualifying certifications for that program. For more information, please see the CPF program certification page.
Is it required to certify an ASIN in the
Ships in Product Packaging program?
No, it is not required to certify all products but it is preferred as Ships in Product Packaging (SIPP) has potential to reduce packaging and provide a better customer delivery experience. Products with packaging dimensions > 18" x 14" x 8" or weight greater than 20 lbs that do not belong to excluded categories (such as hazmat items with transportation requirements, Amazon Fresh items, and more) must be certified as SIPP. Products that are not certified incur a chargeback of $1.99 for each unit shipped to Amazon. Effective January 1, 2025 these rates will change to a variable rate based on product shipping weight ranging from $1.80-$4.40. Learn more about chargebacks and excluded items on Vendor Central.
Once I certify my products, does that certification
have an expiration?
No, certifications do not expire, but products can be decertified from the program. Decertifications commonly occur when a product has exceeded damage or non-compliance rates. When decertifications occur, a Vendor has a 60-day grace period in which chargebacks are waived and incentives are suspended to re-certify their products. Once re-certified, chargebacks will not occur and incentive payments will resume.
What is an example of a why product would be decertified?
Example: an item is certified as SIPP, but the vendor uses a new adhesive to seal the packaging and does not retest with the new seals. This leads to damaged packaging and disappointed customers, and to the item being decertified from the program.
What should I do if my item has been decertified from the program?
If your item has been de-certified, you will need to re-design or make adjustments to your packaging, re-test the new packaging, and re-apply for certification. You may need to simply add a piece of tape for proper closure or change your packaging structure. In order to determine what packaging improvements should be made, review the decertification reason in the Product Prep and Packaging dashboard in Vendor Central. You may also consult with your Amazon POC or someone in our Amazon Packaging Support and Supplier Network (APASS) network.
Do I need to certify my products for all of my vendor codes?
Yes! If you ship to Amazon from multiple vendor codes, you should ensure you are certifying your product for all codes. Certifications will not automatically apply to all vendor codes when you enroll your ASIN. You should indicate each vendor code per ASIN directly in the enrollment template.
If I have similar products that utilize the same packaging,
do I need to test all of them?
No, if you have physically similar items or ASIN variations, you can test one primary ASIN and include all secondary and similar ASINs on one enrollment template. Review our form factor guidelines for detailed requirements and instructions for enrollment.
I want to convert my product’s packaging, but I don’t know
where to start. Does Amazon provide any resources or assistance?
Yes! Navigate to the Packaging Solutions Library to review in-market examples and inspirational designs and prototypes to reference packaging that may work for your products. If you need in-depth assistance, the APASS network provides a list of companies and labs that can help test, design, and supply packaging in line with Amazon’s packaging certification guidelines. In addition to APASS, Vendors looking for external testing services to perform the ISTA 6-Amazon SIOC or Overboxing test methods can leverage the Find a Lab search tool located here.
